What is the ketogenic diet?
There are different types of the diet used by people and by doctors. The therapeutic ketogenic diet is a specialized high fat diet that’s used as an alternative to treat epilepsy after many anticonvulsants have not worked. The therapeutic ketogenic diet is very strict and should start out by asking your doctor or by looking into one of the hospitals and clinics listed on The Charlie Foundation website. We do not recommend you take it upon yourself to start your child on the diet. This diet removes sugars, carbohydrate rich foods like potatoes, cereal, pasta, bread, and rice from the diet. The foods are mostly based on butter, cream, vegetables oils, vegetables, eggs, and beef, poultry and pork, but the diet is generally low protein. The foods on this diet are measured by the gram on a scale precisely for it to be effective.
Check out the articles listed at The Charlie Foundation website for other information regarding pediatric epilepsy.
The ketogenic diet is also used in body building and general weight loss as well.
